Oil/water separators are designed to separate free and dispersed oils and greases (as well as gross quantities of suspended solids) from wastewater or process streams, making it possible for sensitive downstream equipment to perform as designed. In fact, I think you would be hard pressed to find a supplier who does not claim to design their separators around API 421. Unfortunately, most of these companies misunderstand much of the data and misinterpret many of the concepts and theories presented in this publication.
We take every aspect of the design of our separators very seriously. We analyze cross sectional velocities (actual, not nominal), length to height to width ratios (for proper overall flow distribution), laminar flow conditions and Reynolds calculations (for quiescent flow distribution), inlet flow distribution, effluent flow distribution, and every other criteria throughout the entire separator. Most other suppliers only solve for projected surface area, without consideration to any of the other design parameters.

Supplying equipment for installation on a barge can present you with some challenging issues. Suspend the equipment 65 feet below the barge and you have some truly unique challenges to overcome. These specially fabricated fiberglass separators (2 phase liquid / gas) are 12 feet in diameter and over 100 feet long. They operate in an extremely aggressive environment and the fact that they swing under the barges like giant pendulums presented us with some sizeable liquid loading issues. Combine this with the fact that the equipment had to be designed to operate both totally flooded or totally empty AND have a guaranteed lifespan of 28 years, etc... and you can start to understand some of the issues we had to overcome.
